[ she snorts. still stroking curry, she asks, ] Would you tell me a story? I'l braid your hair while you tell it.

Huh?

What sort of story would you wanna hear?

Any you know. A good one.

[wilder]

Oh? And what's a good one to you?

Something exciting. With battles and danger. Nothing about stupid princesses locked in a tower.

[wilder]

Heh...why doesn't that surprise me?

But alright. Grab my hairbrush and I'll try to think of something.

[wolfchild]

[ hopping off the bed with a grin, she grabs his brush and sits next to him again. she takes her time brushing out his hair first. nymeria clambers on the opposite bed, curling up with a sigh. someone's going to end up with fur everywhere. ]

[wilder]

[He eyes Nymeria, but doesn't stop her because hey- not his bed. He makes himself comfortable as she starts brushing his hair]

Hmm...okay! I think I got one.

Have you ever heard of Ching Shih?

No. What's that?

[wilder]

She was a woman in China, on Earth. Well, that's the name she took after she got married and became famous- no one knows her real name.

Anyway, originally she was a prostitute at a brothel. But then one day, a pirate captain named Ching I, decided to take her as a wife. He took her on his ship, and they were together for seven years when he died in a tsunami- uh, a really big ocean wave.

And Cheng I had been so fond of his wife, that when he died, he made it so his entire fleet of ships would be left to her.

[ if she ever sees the black pearl again, cat will have a story to tell her. she might even be given something for it. ]

Was she a pirate too?

[wilder]

Oh, she definitely was. You see, Ching I before he ever met her? I wouldn't say he wasn't a fearsome pirate, but as far as notorious pirates go? He wasn't gonna make it into any history books.

But see, after he married her? His fleet, the Red Flag Fleet, started to get stronger and stronger. My guess is, she was either advising him or maybe she was running whatever part of the fleet he'd let her.

Either way, when she got hold of the fleet? This trend tenfolded because she was just that gifted at being a pirate.

[wolfchild]

[ her hands still in his hair. ]

How many ships did she have at her command? Did she find new lands? Did she conquer them?

[wilder]

Well, I hear over the course of her reign- she had around 1,500 ships under her command. And I dunno about new land, but she raid conquered a lot of villages. To the point that she became the most notorious pirate in all of Earth's history.

But unlike a lot of pirates? She even had pretty strict code of honor on how to handle things. Like if any of her crew harmed a village that were helping them out? She'd cut off their head with a battle axe and throw their bodies in the water. Caught stealing from the pirate treasure? Off with your head, body in the water. Raped a female prisoner? Punishable by immediate death. Hell, even having sex on duty could get your head lopped off. She was not messing around.

[wolfchild]

Her men were scared of her too.

[ the more she hears, the more she sees, the more she is sure that is the way to be. there are many reasons to be followed; only fear will keep them in line. fear and the promise of something better—lest fear turn to hate.

she twists a section of his hair to pull into the braid. ]

The one who passes the sentence must swing the sword. Someone who hides behind an executioner forgets what death is. She did her duty.

[wilder]

Scared, oh yeah they sure were. But they respected her too. She ran a tight shift, but she'd look after what was hers. And I'm sure she'd agree with that. She wasn't afraid to do the dirty deeds herself.

[He shifts a little, tilting his head some with that twist]

Anyway, a couple years after she took over the fleet the Chinese Government got so fed up with Ching Shih's piracy that they decided to send out their best fleet, the Imperial fleet, to attack hers.

Now most pirate- they would've run. Found some place to hide out until things blow over, you know? Imperial fleets weren't something they wanted to mess with.

But not Ching Shih. Instead? She decided to face them head on.

[wolfchild]

She won. [ it's not a question. ] How long did the battle last?

[wilder]

[he chuckles at that]

Maybe a few days, if that? Yeah, she won. Crushed them, really. Ended up taking over 63 of the fleets ships. Any of the Imperial sailors that survived were given two options- join her pirate crew, or be tied down to the deck and beaten to death with clubs.

Which believe it or not, with a choice like that she had no trouble replacing her crew that did die from the battle.

[wolfchild]

I believe it.

[ not laughing and not surprised either. only knowing. she continues dressing his hair. with the top part finished she starts the long braid. ]

Yeah, me too.

After that for the next couple years, she'd battle against a group of renegade pirates as well as Dutch and British ships called in by the Chinese to take her out. She beat them all and kept on pirating.

Finally, the Chinese government conceded there was no way they could beat her, which you should know how much governments hate doing that. And in defeat, they offered her and seventeen thousand crewmen complete amnesty.

Knowing that she couldn't keep up the pirate life forever, she accepted it. She retired with her new husband, her first mate, to the Chinese countryside. She got to keep all her pirate treasure and ran a casino and brothel until she died peacefully as an old woman....which I guess, counts for happily ever after, huh?

[wolfchild]

She did well for herself and her men.

[ it's all arya can grant her. happy endings are for fools and children. ]

Do you like her?

[wilder]

[Shut it Arya if that's not a happy ending I don't know what is]

[And he makes a considering noise]

Hmmm....yes and no?

I mean, as someone not living when she did, I can respect her story. Like how much was against her and she still accomplished all that. She made the best of a bad situation, and worked things so she'd be the one with power. And from the sounds of it, she wasn't a total monster either.

Still...can't say I admire pirates that much. I mean, they do get a lot of innocent folks hurt. I'm not so fond of that part.

[wolfchild]

Pirates aren't so bad. Most will only go after the ships heavy with supplies. They won't destroy them either. If no one fights back, they won't hurt them.

The raiders don't care. They'll steal anything and kill or capture anyone they find.

[wilder]

Hmm...I'll have to take your word for it. My hometown's landlocked and no one would try to raid that place.

Still! I think if there was ever a mission to go up against her in battle, I think I'd respectfully decline.

[wolfchild]

You could pretend to be a pirate. But you'd have to hide your hair. It's only the Tyroshi that dye their hair bright colors.
