[ she makes a moue as she reaches for a bottle of water. blasé enough to sound almost bored, she explains, ] Not bad luck. Hopeless, worthless, I'll never be good enough. I'm a beast, and I'll be put down like one.

[ wolf bitch had been the one she heard most often: do you know what dogs do to a wolf? ]

[And Zelos, sadly, knows too well what that sort of tone really means] Well that stuff's clearly a bunch of garbage.

[And he holds his hand out]

Sure.

[ she lets him have it. ]

[he unscrews the cap and hands it back to her]

You do know that stuff's not true, right?

[ she's a wolf, and her dreams are filled with with teeth and blood. but cat only keeps company with wolves. cat never had a wolf; cat died. she holds the bottle with both hands and takes a drink. ]

[ she glances at him, lowering the bottle. ]

[he'll look at her for a moment, as if studying, thinking. And then, very calmly]

No you didn't.

[And sure is returning to his meal]

I did. Why would anyone lie about that?

Oh, for all sorts of reasons I'd imagine. Profit, attention, or maybe it's just easier to think of yourself as dead. Or maybe something else. [he shrugs]

I profit nothing and I don't want attention. [ she's not a child!! ]

I dunno...you seem to be able to get Allen wrapped around your little finger whenever you want. That's a profit.

Of course, it could be that last one too. With how you are, I'd imagine your life buys hardship in bulk.

[ arya removes cat's face. she had been pretending when she first spoke to zelos. pretending to be happier, more normal, more a young girl.

she isn't now.

arya is simultaneously younger and older than her masks. solemn and tired and her eyes too dark and too flat for anyone, much less a child. tension lies coiled into her muscles. she does not need to tell her history to have it be known; it's inscribed into her skin, marked indelibly for the ones who know how to see.

a pretty child with pretty eyes and a wretch.

she picks up his tablet where it lies on the table. though she looks to be simply playing with it, she goes exactly where she needs to switch off the translator. she puts on her best aselian to say: ] Cat is dead. [ every one of her lies is deeply rooted in truth. it is how she can maintain them.

then she turns it back on and leaves it on her lap. ]

You told me you did not want to know about me. Did you change your mind?

[Zelos isn't surprised to see the face come off. The less happy face. Chosens were masters at putting on a happier face than what they truly felt. Only after he was revived did he start trying out real expressions. People might call him dishonest for his name and claim to be a mercenary, but in truth? Kaneis, even as a fake identity, was more honest than Zelos ever was]

[Maybe it was one of the things that tipped him off about Arya. The dead didn't care enough to lie as much as she did. Since hey, what could happen? They'd become more dead? ]

[The words on the tablet catches his eye, he ponders them. Was there another Cat that was dead? Did she take someone else's name? It's hard for him to tell]

[But her last statement makes him pause. He thinks it over. Knowing more might lead to pain, but at the same time...]

...The last time I choose to listen to lies and ignore the truth, it hurt people I care about...and myself.

So...yeah. I guess I did change my mind.

[ i use the name of a dead woman because i thought it fitting, she told him once. she smiles at the tablet and returns it to zelos. ]

Not here. [ smiles must come at her bidding. she flashes a great one. ] You'll have to take me fishing. You promised.

Right, right fishing.

We'll go, and then you can tell me stuff there. Promise.

[ she pulls up her feet into the seat and slings her arms loosely around her legs. her chin is propped on her knees. ]

You haven't said if you like it. [ all the accusatory tone is missing is a pointed finger. she cooked, where's the praise? ]
