Angel Toxicosis
Spoilers: It's bad.

In Symphonia, Angel Toxicosis is the name for the process/condition in which a person becomes an angel. The entire process is extremely painful and slow. It has multiple steps that slowly strips the victim of their humanity while also giving them special abilities. By the end of it, the victim is left as an empty shell with their soul trapped inside their body, unable to do anything. Fun!


What causes Angel Toxicosis?
Angel Toxicosis is caused by a special magic crystal called a Cruxis Crystal. If applied directly to the skin, it'll give a person all sorts of abilities. Unfortunately, it will also trigger Angel Toxicosis.

Cruxis Crystals are by nature, parasitic beings that strive to fuse with their host. Unfortunately, they do this by tapping into a person's mana (aka their life force ) and starts interfering/siphoning from it. In the end, without intervention, the crystal consumes the very soul of the person.

What treats Angel Toxicosis?
In Symphonia, the best way to treat Angel Toxicosis is by using a special item called a keycrest. It's made out of a special metal called "inhibitor ore" and has magic runes carved into it by dwarven craftsmen.

When a keycrest is worn, it acts as a regulator between the crystal and its host. It allows the host to tap into some of the abilities that the crystal offers but makes sure the crystal doesn't siphon their mana.

That said, I'm completely open to finding other methods to treat it! If all else fails, I will apply a failsafe and make Zelos's keycrest work again

Why don't you just remove the crystal?
Unfortunately once a cruxis crystal is applied to a person, it is very dangerous to remove it with or without a keycrest. Worst case scenario, it'll cause the mana in the person to go into shock and cause them to transform a hideous monster that's in constant pain and can only be cured with high level magic using a unicorn horn. Which you can bet we're all too poor for one of those.

Best case scenario, an angel's body has grown so dependent on the crystal's energy supply that it'd send them into mass organ failure and die. So...don't do that!

What are the stages of Angel Toxicosis?
Angel toxicosis happens in multiple stages over time. With the progression of each stage, the victim will become extremely feverish and weak for a few hours before it clears up. Zelos's stage progression is currently being dictated by regains.

Note they also gain a bunch of light-element attacks and spells during this, but i won't bother listing them all out since they aren't relevant.

STAGE 1: Person gains wings and has and overall ability boost. They also lose their ability to eat/drink. They no longer have a sense of taste, and anything they try to consume won't stay down.

STAGE 2: Person gains super hearing and vision. The hearing is described as they can hear the faintest sound from far away, and that it's honestly painful. They also lose the ability to sleep and probably become physically incapable of crying at this point.

STAGE 3: Person loses their sense of touch. They can no longer feel pain, or any other sensation such as temperature or textures.

STAGE 4: Person loses their ability to speak.

STAGE 5: The final stage. The person becomes an empty shell, and the body goes full into self-defense mode -- meaning it will only respond to stimuli that could risk its safety. Considering angels are overpowered as hell, this is bad! The soul of the person is trapped inside and aware of what's going on, but is unable to do anything. If left untreated long enough, the soul is consumed by the crystal fully and they die. This process can a LONG time and is pretty hella horrific.


OTHER NOTES:
- Angels are STRONG. Colette was able to lift a grown bodybuilder of a man with one hand and described him as "light".
- Angels are also immortal! They do not age physically. This is not relevant to Kaisou though.

Demons/Vampires/Undead: Zelos is an angel, which means he's full of holy/light power. If your character is the type who gets hurt by that, talk to me about it and we can work something out! Since his full powers are currently sealed, generally I'd just imagine any holy-related pain would only come from direct skin contact or his wings (which are almost never out ANYWAY, so most should be safe). But yes please talk to me about it so we can hash out details!

Characters that Can Detect Magic: He has magic that can be sense, though it's harder to sense that he's an angel. Characters with really strong senses might pick up that there's something not quite right here.

Characters that Can Sense Souls: Might be able to pick up on the fact that his soul/life-force is essentially bound to the crystal on his chest. It's pretty freaky.

Revealing that character's future or intended fate in the games: Ahahaha considering he comes from the officially non-canonical ending, this is the way of the game. If anything, I'm really hoping people connect the dots that something is WRONG here with how this Zelos's path ended.

Warnings/disclaimers: Topics around SUICIDE are the main one, even if he'll probably never say it openly. After that he's a sexual character, so be mindful than that. He also drinks and swears. Let's face it, he embraces ALL of the seven deadly sins.

Supernatural sensing of species/soul-reading/etc., as well as magical abilities: Zelos was born human, despite what people in his world think. However he was transformed into an angel via a soul-sucking rock attached to his chest, so that probably makes him appear weird on any species scan. Essentially he would appear as human but something is off at the same time that would make him seem not quite human anymore. He has magic too (mostly elemental stuff), so they can pick up on that too.

Soul sensing...uh yeah. Remember how I said it's a soul sucking rock? Well you can definitely see his soul attached to that rock. It's unnatural and freaky.

Could this character theoretically tame a unicorn?: Nope. Very much not a virgin and not that great with animals either.
