[ he inhales before exhaling, measured and intent. ]
In my world, you have to open yourself up to the forces of Darkness to be possessed. Darkness is... pretty powerful. Most people can't control it, and they end up turning into monsters and losing their hearts because it overwhelms them.
[ a moment; ] Not the organ. The... your emotions, your self, kind of.
[He's familiar with the idea. Even if darkness didn't quite work like that in his world - it sure sounded familiar enough to the final stage of Angel Toxicosis for him to get the idea]
Yeah. [ because he doesn't know what unversed are lalalala ]
... when I was fifteen, I didn't know any of that. I just thought the Darkness was powerful, and that it could help me protect the people who mattered to me. [ there's another pause; it's kind of hard to say, somehow. ] But the guy who possessed me in the end--Xehanort, he just told me that I'd get stronger.
Just turned out I was playing into his hands. [ he clears his throat. ]
I didn't know to control it back then, I'd hurt myself a lot... and by the time I forced him out of me, it was still too much for me to handle.
Like I said, most people can't control it... so there aren't really many teachers that could teach me how. I've had to find out how to control it on my own.
Well, you see- where I come from? Darkness is just considered one of the eight elements of mana. Sometimes it gets a bad rep, but it's not really good or evil. I mean- there's downsides to it, and you do have to make sure to keep it in check - but that's no different from any of the other seven.
I mean, yeah- I get you have a bad history with it. That someone hurt you a lot with it. That'd be enough to scare anyone off any element. I can really understand that. [He thinks of Sheena...her fear of lightning after what happened with Volt. It took a lot to get over that] And I don't expect you to get over that completely anytime soon....if ever.
But...you can't treat an element like it's a rabid dog you're terrified to step near, then expect it to listen to your commands. They don't work that way.
[ there's a moment of silence--and riku knows he's right. he can't get any better at controlling his darkness if he doesn't try to control it. but using it feels... wrong, especially by itself. it feels like slipping into the past, even if he's just trying to get stronger. ]
I know.
I guess... [ he hesitates. ] I've been too scared to make another mistake. But not practicing just makes it more uncontrollable... I think they call that a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Where do you even start learning how to control something without letting it take over you, when no one's done it? If there was just one person who wasn't evil, that'd make things a whole lot easier.
Powers are different from world to world... usually. Maybe I'd be able to learn a thing or two, but I don't know if they could teach me how to control a power they've never actually used before.
Yeah...maybe. I can't use darkness, so I couldn't tell ya myself.
Uh...[He thinks real hard to remember the name] ...Emil, I think.
He's a good guy, despite what he'll claim. Helped me out a few times. Last I heard, he was using his power to help keep the gate between my world, and the demon world that's connected to it sealed.
[Well Richter who helped seal it from the inside too is a broody guy who made a horrible mess of everything out of a misguided effort to help bring back his friend - and Emil's true form for is most likely a big talking rodent - so yeah! Pretty much what happened with you and that door Riku]
Heh...
If he ever shows up, I'll introduce you two. I'm sure you'd get along.
[Just...nevermind Zelos's tendency to assume that anyone he considers to actually be a friend is someone that EVERYONE would or should like]
voice;
he pauses for a moment or two before; ]
Do they have possession in your world?
voice;
[And there's a pause there. Oh hahaha he already is unsure about where this is going]
...Rarely. But it's not unheard of.

voice;
an exhale. ]
I just don't want to hurt anyone because I didn't know how to control it. But you can't learn how to do something without trying...
voice;
[It's said evenly. Neither accusatory or concerned. Simply...stating an observation.]
voice;
Yeah. That's it.
voice;
You can use other elements, right? Magically, I mean.
voice;
Every elemental spell I learned, I can't do anymore. It's weird.
voice;
But that's not really what I mean.

[To put it lightly. And he raises his eyebrow, even if Riku can't see it]
You mean no one you know whose done it. There's been loads of dark mages in my world, both good and evil.
[There's a sigh on his end] It's too bad my friend isn't here, I'm sure I'd be able to talk him into helping you out.

Sounds like a good person. Guess I'll trust your judgement.

Let's hope.
[ ... ] Thanks.
voice;
Though hey...thanks for telling me. I know it wasn't easy.
voice;
he breathes in, and breathes back out. ]
Today's my birthday--I'm eighteen. That's an adult back in my world.
I guess I figured it was time to be a little more responsible.
